Fantastic Fest ’09 Review: Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant (2009)
Studio: Universal Pictures
Directed By: Paul Weitz
Cast: John C. Reilly, Chris Massoglia, Josh Hutcherson, Jessica Carlson, Salma Hayek
Review By: Kayley Viteo
Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant turned out to be the surprise of Fantastic Fest for me. I went solely because I love John C. Reilly, figuring, at the very least, he would be entertaining. The MTV Movies Blog got the first look at the new poster for Daybreakers, a vampire story set in the near dystopian future, where a plague has turned most of the human population into vampires. Humans are now farmed for blood and are slowly becoming extinct. A vampire researcher named Edward Dalton, who refuses to drink human blood (there’s always one of those), believes he can discover a synthetic substitute that would let vampires and humans co-exist peacefully (a la True Blood). Daybreakers stars Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, …

C’est la vie. For better or for worse, I am a horror fiend and this kind of reporting is what I do. Go ahead. Call me a scumbag.
So what do I say about a film called “Vaginal …

JESUS CHRIST VAMPIRE HUNTER… Jesus Christ. I have reviewed some B-Movies in my day but this was the B-Movie. Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter is the type of movie that makes you stand up and take notice of independent horror flicks and appreciate those movies that are diamonds in the rough. This is not one of those movies. While this movie won several awards at film festivals it makes …

The film, directed by Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) is a remaking of the stellar and highly original Norwegian vampire film LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, a film that is nearly undisputed as being the best feature of 2008.

Vampires do not sparkle. That said, the sparkly vampires of Stephenie Meyer’s TWILIGHT series have made vampires all the rage once again. This is a cycle that seems to recur every twenty years or so, brought on by some piece of media that genre fans simply cannot get enough of. Once upon a time it was Anne Rice’s turn and then a little roleplaying game called VAMPIRE: THE …
