‘The Monk’ Coming To DVD
by Ben Bussey
You may recall a while back Keri was mightily impressed by The Monk, director Dominik Moll’s adaptation of the 1796 Gothic novel by Matthew Lewis. Well, good news: it’s out on Region 2 DVD on the 20th of August, courtesy of Metrodome.
Official synopsis: “Abandoned as a baby on the steps of a monastery and raised in strict Capuchin fashion, Ambrosio has become the most famous preacher in the country. While large crowds from all over the country come to hear his mesmerizing sermons, he’s also bitterly envied for his success by certain fellow monks.
Convinced of his virtue and righteousness, Brother Ambrosio thinks he is immune to temptation until obscure events start terrorizing the monastery. Could they be connected to the unexpected arrival of Valerio, an apprentice monk who has the miraculous gift to relieve Ambrosio’s splitting headaches and hides his disfigured face under a wax mask?”
If that doesn’t sell you, Keri describes it as “a character-driven movie, with the performance of Cassel at its heart… an absorbing, brilliant piece of filmmaking.”
And hey – it’s Vincent Cassell. Everyone likes him, don’t they? He’s just cool. And he gets to do things with Monica Bellucci. That’ll test anyone’s vows of chastity.
