Pleasure cruise with Neil Marshall, Viggo Mortensen, Ben Kingsley and (potentially) Noomi Rapace, anyone?

I’ve been holding off reporting on this one, for the simple reason that – to be blunt – the last few years have felt like a colossal cock-tease for Neil Marshall fans. Not that I hold the man himself at fault; I realise getting movies made is a tricky business, particularly as since Centurion Marshall has been trying to get his first big-budget US-based production off the ground. First it was meant to be Burst, then Underground, then Hellfest – which, the murmurs have it, may still be on the cards – but now, if the widely reported news broken by Bloody-Disgusting is correct, it’s going to be The Last Voyage of the Demeter that will roll first for Millenium Films, with the aforementioned players attached. Mortensen’s imminent casting in the lead looks to be the move that seals the deal.

The synopsis as given by B-D: “Demeter” is the name of the ship that carried Dracula’s coffin from Transylvania to England in Bram Stoker’s classic tale.

The story, penned by Bragi Schut Jr. (plus Lowell Cauffiel and James V. Hart),is based on a chapter in Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” describing the arrival of the vampire count in England on a cargo ship that has crashed into the rocks at Whitby with no crew and the dead captain lashed to the steering wheel. Stoker tells the story via the captain’s log of the voyage, which begins in Bulgaria and becomes increasingly disjointed as members of the crew disappear… it’s said to place the voyage center stage in a tale that is reminiscent of the first movie in the Alien franchise, in which a crew is slaughtered one-by-one by a mysterious passenger. “

At last, a potentially fresh take on the well-worn tale. No doubt about it, there’s the potential for something really cool and creepy here, especially with Marshall at the helm.

Ears to the ground for more on this. In the meantime, can’t wait to see Marshall’s episode of Game of Thrones. No spoilers please, commenters…
