UK DVD News: Upcoming Cult Releases From Eureka Entertainment
Just got word from Eureka Entertainment about some pretty exciting new releases lined up for early 2012. Coolest of these, in my book, is the world’s first Blu-Ray edition of Repo Man. Not to be confused with Repo Men or Repo: The Genetic Opera, Alex Cox’s 1984 classic is a gloriously oddball punk black comedy with bizarre hints of sci-fi, featuring Harry Dean Stanton at his most droll and Emilio Estevez making for a surprisingly convincing punk. It was a landmark movie for my childhood; never before had I word the word “fuck” used with such regularity. Even more entertaining was the BBC-approved TV edit, for which Cox re-assembled the entire cast and replaced every “fuck” with “flip,” and “motherfucker” with “melon farmer.” No word on what the extras will be, but I for one would love to see the option to watch that TV version in shiny HD. The Blu-Ray, and a limited edition Steelbook edition, will be released 20th February 2012.
Also lined up for release, Eureka have a bit more J-sploitation for you. First off there’s Noboru (Machine Girl, Robogeisha, Mutant Girl Squad) Iguchi’s Tomie: Unlimited, released to DVD on 23rd January; then there’s Tak Sakaguchi’s Yakuza Weapon, and Yudai Yamaguchi’s Deadball, both out 26th March. Haven’t seen any of these yet, but I can’t get enough of that Japanese splatter lately.
