DreadCentral reports today that genre favourite Bill Moseley has been cast in the upcoming The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D/Leatherface 3D/whatever it’s called.

I’m sorry. Forgive my somewhat disdainful tone. There’s every possibility that Leatherface 3D will be an interesting, even good film. After all, it’s going to be about Heather, a woman who travels to Texas to collect an inheritance, only to find that part of it is a hulking cousin who goes by the name of Leatherface. And it’s in 3D. And it’s a sequel to a film that’s been sequelised plenty already. I’d say my cynicism is a little merited – and this is from someone who enjoys the somewhat divisive Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. I didn’t enjoy the Platinum Dunes remake, although I’ll concede it was at least a well-made film (my complaints about that film are lengthy, boring, and not nearly topical enough to go into here). I have very little faith that this is a film that I will enjoy.

Regardless – my grievances with yet another damn Texas Chainsaw Massacre film are not my main thought following this casting news. It’s that I really like Bill Moseley, and would rather he wasn’t within a million miles of this film. I know, I’m just a lowly fan and really, it doesn’t matter what I think, but Choptop is such a great character that I’m terrified that Moseley’s new character, ‘Drayton’ (a nod to Jim Siedow’s character from the first two films), will only besmirch Choptop’s legacy further.

Maybe that’s the power these remakes, reboots and sequels now have: instilling the fear of ruining the memory of films that were genuinely good in the first place.
