It Came From Underground – March 2, 2010
by Cory J. Udler
Yeah, I know it’s been a while. In all honesty, I haven’t had enough time to really sit down and write an article in the last few months and even if I had I didn’t have anything of any importance to say, nothing insightful or helpful, nothing of any use whatsoever to anyone living or dead. Well, I’m back so I must have something important to say! If I could only remember what that was…
I can’t remember so instead, I’ll let everyone know that my next film “Mediatrix” is 100% on track and will shoot in April for a late summer release. Guys, this thing has been so up and down it was starting to look like Grandma Blowjob on McGillicuddy Street on a Saturday night before rent is due. Originally, I was to shoot the film in October of last year. My financier fell through and very few people had any interest in helping to fund the movie. I was broke and couldn’t afford to put any money into another movie at that point. So it got pushed. In that time it’s been on again, off again, on track, off track, bright and bleak. Initially it was to star the amazing Debbie Rochon as the Virgin Mary. But, due to scheduling conflicts with Deb that’s going to be impossible to make happen. However, I can proudly announce right here right now that Shannon Lark (2009 Fangoria Spooksmodel, Viscera Film Festival and Chainsaw Mafia founder, actress, dancer, all around incredible, amazing and talented woman) will be stepping into the role and bringing The Virgin Mary to life like she’s never been portrayed before. I can say that without fear of contradiction. We are shooting in April, the movie will be ready to roll by late summer and throughout the process I’ll take you through every step of making the movie in the hopes that it can inspire someone out there to make their own damn movie!
In the meantime, I want to dedicate this week’s article to some indie horror projects that you need to know about. I’m going to give you the links, all you need to do is tune in, turn on and support the ever loving shit out of each and every one of these movies.
Wolfgang Meyer’s Song Of The Shattered: The movie is written by the uber talented Brandon Slagle and stars Devanny Pinn, Deneen Melody, Tara Cardinal and Brandon himself, and it looks like one of the most uncompromising, balls out horror movies of the year. Joe Hollow is also behind bringing this little slice of hell to the masses, and Joe has not only made his mark on indie horror, he continues to push the envelope and create more and more amazing indie horror art in his own way. Joe Hollow-remember that name. Don’t believe me? Check out the trailer and show this sick motherfucker some love. (ed note: read the official Brutal As Hell review right here!)
Shawn Allen’s Mountain Of The Flesheaters: The title alone gets my attention. Then once you see the poster art they’ve created, it’s an easy one to get behind. The movie stars one of my favorite genre actresses in the game today, Kaylee Williams, and is currently seeking funding on Indie Go Go. They’ve got a ways to go to reach their goal, but Shawn has set up some fantastic perks for those who donate, so instead of that 1500 calorie latte today, give 10 bones to this production and see the movie come to life thanks to your help. Go, now, check it out at IndieGogo.
Justin R Romine and Andy Schatner’s Afraid of Sunrise: I was lucky enough to have Andy be a part of the first “Incest Death Squad” and have remained friends with him since then. The movie also stars one of my favorite people in the entire world, Tom Lodewyck. The minute they told me what they were up to with this movie, I have become its biggest cheerleader. Great cast, great story, amazing concept, talented cast and crew and finally-vampires that don’t fucking shine. The trailer they have put together is hands down the best indie horror trailer I have ever seen. Don’t believe me? Fuck you. No, whoops, sorry. I mean, go check it out NOW.
Now, for one of the more mind bending, vomit inducing, pecker and boobie acid trip movies you could ever wish to see (and after you see it, remember, you can’t un-see it), I beg you to do yourself a favor and buy a copy of Drew Bolduc and Dan Nelson’s The Taint. I first became aware of this little slice of sleazy heaven from my pal Jeff Atencio (aka-“The Jaded Viewer”), and just from seeing the tiny bit I did, I bought the movie and have been singing it’s praises ever since. Here’s the website- www.taintmovie.com Seriously, you’ve never seen a movie quite like this one before. Fantastic gore effects, wonderful editing and the best opening credits sequence I have ever seen in an indie horror/exploitation movie. (ed note: check out our supreme review of The Taint right here!)

I’m leaving out at least another 10 flicks that you have to support, but I think I’ve overloaded you with enough for one week. Seriously, I know horror and exploitation fans are fed up with remakes and slick “Hollywood exploitation”, so refocus your attention to the underground. That’s where the coolest shit is going down.
