Sundance 2010: ‘The Oregonian’ Trailer, Plus Calvin Reeder Shorts

by Marc Patterson
While cruising through the net looking for something else entirely I found the trailer for a really wild looking film from alternative art-house gore-meister Calvin Reeder that will be screening at Sundance called The Oregonian. For those who haven’t been paying close attention, Sundance is right around the corner – starting up on January 20th. While we won’t be there this year we are nonetheless keeping our eye on a handful of films that look good, so we can follow them throughout SXSW and into Fantastic Fest in the fall. As of right now The Oregonian is one of those we’re watching. This entry from Calvin Reeder seems to have been glossed over a bit by fellow horror bloggers, and it’s too bad because The Oregonian looks plain sick. I’m not sure if it’s going to turn out to be some Cronenberg inspired mind-fuck, but from the teaser trailer it looks pretty cerebral and horrifying, in the same manner that Reeder’s short films are.
If you haven’t yet discovered this film, then I’m happy to present the trailer to you now. The leading lady is Lindsay Pulsipher, who played a shapeshifting panther woman in the last season of True Blood. Pulsipher has worked with Reeder since his earliest days, so none of the material is unfamiliar terrain for her.
We have the synopsis and trailer below, but if you really want a special treat keep cruising down the page to watch two of Calvin Reeder’s shorts – Little Farm, and The Rambler. Both star Lindsay Pulsipher and Calvin Reeder. Neither are long – Little Farm around 8 minutes and The Rambler at 13 minutes, but both will leave you feeling slightly off-kilter by the time they’re over. You’ll also have a pretty solid feel for what The Oregonian plans to deliver on.
The Oregonian synopsis: There is a place. A place where the skies are wide and the forests are thick–and strange. You can lose yourself forever in these woods. You’ll meet truckers with problems and old women with strange powers. You may even make a furry friend. Just be sure to stay quiet. Spend some time with a woman from Oregon who is lost on the road and running away from her past. Now she has a chance to experience everything the grotesque Northwest has to offer, whether she likes it or not.
