Slash & Dine: ‘Black Christmas’ – Meet Nicole and Megan

Posted on December 19, 2010 by Deaditor

“Agnes, it’s me Nicole and Megan.”

Hey boys and ghouls! Slash & Dine is back and with new hosts! We’re Nicole and Megan and we promise to bring you great movies, great food and a great time! We can’t wait to share our recipes and gush over gore with you. We want to start this column off right and in keeping with the holiday season, we bring you Black Christmas (1974). The way we see it, you can’t go wrong with a house full of cool chicks, a few drunks, John Saxon and a guy making obscene phone calls. It’s Christmas time and a sorority house is ready to party, but they’re getting continuously interrupted by an unknown caller who moans, groans and uses language that would make a sailor blush. One by one the girls start to disappear as the calls get more frequent. But who and where is this caller, “Billy”? Without saying too much, I will tell you that it is one hell of an answer. This film was pure originality back in the day and the fright is still there. Really, go watch this movie alone, at night, around Christmas, and dare to not be scared. It’s dark, creepy and real and for all those reasons, we think you’ll love it.

Let’s begin our night of terror with an appetizer…

Celery “stalk”er Soup

Ingredients:
1 onion, chopped
3 bunches of celery, sliced
3 carrots, sliced
6 cups vegetable broth
3 tablespoons butter
3 tablespoons flour
1 cup milk
2 tablespoons olive oil
salt and pepper
croutons

Directions:
Heat olive oil in a large saucepan. Add the onions, celery, and carrots and saute for about 5 minutes. Add the vegetable broth and cook until vegetables are tender, about 15-20 minutes. Carefully blend soup in a blender, working in batches. Add back to pan. In small saucepan, melt butter and whisk in flour. Cook for a few minutes and slowly whisk in milk. Cook for a few minutes until milk starts to thicken. Stir into the blended celery soup mixture. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve soup with croutons sprinkled on top.

And for our favorite drunk in Black Christmas…

Mrs. Mac & Cheese

Ingredients:
2 cups elbow macaroni
2 cups shredded sharp Cheddar cheese
3 cups small curd cottage cheese
2 cups sour cream
1/4 cup Feta cheese
1/4 cup grated Asiago cheese
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
Salt and pepper

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Bring lightly salted water to a boil, add pasta and cook until pasta is flexible, but still a little firm; drain. In a large mixing bowl, stir together macaroni, cottage cheese, sour cream, Cheddar cheese, Feta cheese, Asiago cheese & Parmesan cheese. Add salt and pepper to taste. Add mixed ingredients to 9×13″ baking dish. Bake in oven for 35 minutes or until top is golden brown.

Sherry Pretty Pink Bundt Cake

Ingredients:
1 (18.25 ounce) package yellow cake mix
4 eggs
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 cup cream sherry
1 (3.5 ounce) package instant vanilla pudding mix
1/2 cup white sugar
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon clove
1/2 teaspoon ginger
1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder

For the glaze:
1-2 drops pink food coloring
4-5 tablespoons milk
3/4 cup powdered sugar

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Coat the sides and bottom of a 10″ Bundt cake pan with butter. In a small bowl, mix cinnamon, sugar and cocoa. In a large bowl, combine the cake mix, eggs, oil, clove, ginger, nutmeg, sherry and pudding mix. Beat until well blended. Pour half of the batter into the Bundt pan, sprinkle with half of the cinnamon, sugar and cocoa mixture, cover with the remaining batter. Top with remaining cinnamon mixture. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes. Cool in pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto rack. In another small mixing bowl, add milk, powdered sugar and food coloring; stir until well blended and add additional milk if needed until it reaches a pourable consistency. Once cake is cooled, transfer to serving tray and gently pour the pink glaze over the top. Ready to serve.

It’s clear that this film paved the way for others to follow (yes, I’m talking about When a Stranger Calls and numerous other slashers). But Black Christmas takes the cake (mmm… cake). Do yourself a favor and watch this. We think it’s the best holiday horror flick out there.

Be sure to check back soon as we promise to bring you more baking, more booze and more bad-ass films!

- Nicole & Megan

About your hostesses:
Nicole and Megan are the tag team of horror and cooking. While Megan was a young’un swooning over Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing & Vincent Price, Nicole was just a few miles away turning off the Saturday morning cartoons to watch Rosemary’s Baby and Carrie with her mom. Megan grew up and worked in bakeries while dreaming of how to make the perfect zombie vs. shark cake and Nicole worked for a horror film company dreaming about eating that cake. Now, they both reside in Trashville, IL (there’s literally a Nascar track around the corner) and enjoy drinking whiskey, taxidermy, cowboy boots, leopard print and all things horror. Their heroes include Jesco White, Dolly Parton, and Elvis Presley. When they’re not watching Hammer films or Twin Peaks, you can find them baking, painting their nails with glitter and sewing patches on their motorcycle jackets. They’re the biggest, the meanest, and the baddest.
