‘I Spit On Your Grave’ Original and Remake to Get February DVD/Blu-ray Release

by Marc Patterson
Sometimes we overlook news around here. Not often, but sometimes. In light of the holidays we completely missed the bit about Anchor Bay releasing BOTH the remake and original versions of I Spit On Your Grave on February 8th. This is going to be quite epic for fans of the film(s). Already the remake has been causing quite the buzz. Nobody would have predicted that horror fans would actually LIKE the remake, but that seems to be the trend. Even the mainstream press has been supportive, which is something rather unheard of when it comes to genre film. (well all except for that old curmudgeon Roger Ebert – he still fuckin’ hates it). Even Rue Morgue called the film “a cinematic bulldozer…it handily trumps the original in the ferocious revenge sequences.” That’s pretty high praise considering the source. The great news is that come February the opinions are going to start flying around and we really can’t wait to see what you all think.
By now you’re all fairly well familiar with the story, so I’d be preaching to the choir to post and re-post the synopsis for the film. Meir Zarchi didn’t create the first rape/revenge film back in 1978, but there’s no denying that (especially over the past couple of years) he’s found a new young audience for his original film that has grown to support the new vision by Steven R. Monroe. It didn’t hurt that Zarchi was on board all along and acted in a consultative role to Monroe.
So let’s get down to brass tacks. What are these packages going to include? Anchor Bay has always been really good in treating horror fans right and these releases would appear to be no exception to the rule.
We’re told from the press release that bonus features on both the 2010 Remake Blu-ray and DVD will include “A filmmakers commentary track with Hansen and Monroe, an in-depth behind-the-scenes featurette, the original theatrical teaser and trailer, deleted scenes and much more.”
Then on the 1978 Original film, which finds its way to Blu-ray for the first time we’ll be seeing an “All-new high definition transfer, Dolby TrueHD audio and an all-new interview with writer/producer/director Meir Zarchi about the making of this infamous cinematic landmark and its legacy for the past three decades.” Awesome. Let’s hope this is as good as it sounds.
