We’ve been following the development of Frank Darabont’s Walking Dead since news first broke of his negotiations with AMC and producer Gale Anne Hurd to bring the beloved comic book property to life. Based on the Image comic by Robert Kirkman, The Walking Dead follows police officer Rick Grimes as he wakes from a gunshot-induced coma to find the hospital empty and the outside filled, inexplicably, with zombies. Rick sets off to find his wife and son, joins up with a group of fellow survivors, and faces the harsh realities and upside-down morals of this tragic new world. The story is filled with rich character development, and the title refers not only to the zombies, but to the humans who have become “the walking dead”, and could be killed at any moment.

Issue 78 of the monthly comic series was released earlier this month, and you’re doing yourself a great disservice by not giving this incredible series a chance by picking up either the first trade volume or compendium (which collect multiple issues for those of you who are impatient and need to devour your information in a meatier format).

AMC has officially released the first trailer, which can be viewed in all of its beauty below. There was a bootleg copy floating around post-Comic-Con, but if you’re like us and refused to view that version, you’ll find yourself greatly rewarded for your patience:

Most of the trailer seems to follow the comics with some fresh material thrown in by Kirkman, Darabont, and the excellent team of writers they’ve enlisted. Two scenes in particular grab me: Rick riding off on his horse, zombies in pursuit, and the tank being engulfed by zombies like ants descending on a wayward piece of candy. Another welcome addition to the story is Michael Rooker, who doesn’t appear to be playing a character from the comic book, but seems to round out the beginnings of this story with some possible additional conflict.

But the most exciting part of the trailer for fans of the books? Seeing Andrew Lincoln bring our endearing and enduring protagonist Rick Grimes to life. There is nothing more thrilling than seeing Rick Grimes, in uniform, with his hat and his gun.

The Walking Dead electrifies your television with a 90 minute premiere on Sunday, October 31st, at 10/9 central.
