Official Teaser for Abram’s Super 8 and a Strange Screen Shot!
by Britt Hayes
If you head on over to Apple, you can check out the HD version of the teaser for JJ Abrams’ Super 8, which is being executive produced by Steven Spielberg. Super 8 promises to be something along the lines of early Amblin films. Automatically, E.T. comes to mind. Still, there’s nothing I’d rather see more than an Abrams/Spielberg collaboration, even if it were called Schindler’s Park Trek. Especially if it were called Schindler’s Park Trek.
The teaser showed before Iron Man 2 over the weekend, and there isn’t much to be seen. The title cards tell us that in 1979, Area 51 was shut down, and everything inside was ordered to be sent to a secure facility in Ohio. We see a train coming down a track, and then a man in a truck, driving extremely dangerously, veers onto the track and causes the train to crash. The camera sweeps over the debris, while the title card tells us that next summer, “it arrives”. We see the camera close up on the door of a train car with a US Air Force logo. Something is banging on the inside of the door, trying to get out. Things get a bit choppy right when the door is about to burst open.
Being the nerd I am and wanting to jump on the viral train early, I went through the teaser frame by frame. At the end, there’s a choppy reel of footage that flashes pretty quick before displaying the film’s title. In that footage, made up mostly of letters in red marker on a white background (part of the film, not the footage, I assume), I found this:
This appears to be the image of a child. Maybe this film really is closer to E.T. Don’t get me wrong, I fucking love E.T., but I really don’t want this to be a movie about a boy and his alien. Unless that alien is bat shit bananas scary and eats people. The teaser implies that whatever is in that train car is something terrifying. And I like that.
Let the speculation begin!
