Neil Marshall is ‘Burst’-ing Into Action Soon
by Ben Bussey
As his sword & sandal slash-’em-up Centurion opens across the UK (though not at my locale, annoyingly), Digital Spy caught a word with Neil Marshall and learned that his next flick, Burst, is “hopefully going into production in the summertime.” The movie will see Marshall return to the horror genre, but in new company: Sam Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures and Lionsgate. I’m assuming that means he’ll be leaving his beloved northern Britain and shooting stateside with a US cast, although Marshall doesn’t say anything to confirm this. All we know for sure is it’s shooting in 3-D, and involves people spontaneously exploding. ALL RIGHT.
Marshall’s last two, more action-oriented movies have divided fans somewhat; for myself, I’ve yet to see Centurion, but I think Doomsday kicks arse no matter what anyone says! Whichever side of the fence you’re on, I’m sure we’re all happy to see him return to full-fledged horror, particularly under the wing of Raimi. Yes, Ghost House’s initial output was far from inspiring (Boogeyman… yawn), but then Raimi delivered Drag Me To Hell. They’ve upped their game, and hiring Marshall is further reflection of that.
And… exploding people. Now THAT is what 3-D was made for. Why is it that only the horror filmmakers seem to recognise that recently? Yes, My Bloody Valentine 3-D and The Final Destination were pretty mediocre, but they knew enough to throw shit at the screen the way 3-D movies used to. And if Aja’s Piranha 3-D winds up delivering on the promised excesses of boobs and blood, I sure hope Marshall and Raimi will be sitting in the auditorium taking notes, and doing their utmost to top it.
Check out Digital Spy’s article for a video interview snippet with Marshall, wherein he mentions Burst, and answers the question of a continuing Descent franchise with a resounding… ‘don’t know.’
