Coming Up From Jake West: ‘The Scribbler’

I can’t speak for everyone at Brutal As Hell, but I myself am a firm admirer of Jake West, the British director behind two gems of low-budget trash horror, Razor Blade Smile and Evil Aliens. Now Bloody Disgusting  reports that his latest is in the works, with several key cast members already in place:

“The Scribbler (…) will star Christina Cole, Felicity Jones, Kaime Winstone, Lee Ingleby and Sean Pertwee. The film is a noir sci-fi action thriller about a young woman recently released from a mental hospital, and continuing a treatment programme to rid her of her alternate personalities. She moves into a halfway house for mental patients where the residents begin to die at an unusual rate. “

NB – I’m assuming they mean Jaime Winstone, daughter of Ray and star of Donkey Punch and Dead Set.

I’m not going to lie to you – I’m somewhat ill at ease with how serious this sounds. West is a director most at home with the ridiculous and distasteful, and the last time he tried to play it straight was Pumpkinhead 3: Ashes To Ashes, and the less said about that the better. It doesn’t help that West’s last effort, Doghouse, was quite a disappointment, a half-hearted blend of old-school splatter and contemporary British lad comedy. Still, he’s delivered the goods before, so here’s hoping he’ll do so again. Maybe a step in a different genre direction is just what the doctor ordered. Let’s wait and see.

No release date info as of yet.

Editor’s Note: The Scribbler is based on a graphic novel by Daniel Schaffer and published by Image comics. Schaffer is also the author of Doghouse, the aforementioned film also directed by Jake West.
