‘Survival of the Dead’ Red Band Trailer Needs More Red

Folks, I gotta fever and the only prescription is more cowbell! Well in this case, I at least need some more red gettin’ spread! The red band trailer for George A. Romero’s latest zombie flick Survival of the Dead has hit the web today in a maelstrom leaving limbs and body parts in its wake. It’s just too bad we didn’t get to see any of them. Apparently they were left on the cutting floor. What’s the point in releasing a red band trailer if you’re not going to show jack or squat? This doesn’t put such a good taste in my mouth considering Diary of the Dead was a total pile of waste and left me wondering what exactly happened to our hero of zombism? Has Romero’s creativity finally run dry?

To be fair we know Romero doesn’t cut his own trailers. But coming off a less than positive review (read here) from staff writer Dustin Hall, I’m left feeling like Survival of the Dead could be a survival of my endurance.  It’s just come up lacking at all fronts.  Mind you… that crazy old man WAS quite humorous.  Perhaps not all is lost.

Now before you all think I’m a hater of Romero I’d like to say it just ain’t true.  I’ll even go so far as to extend that beyond his original films to say that I really liked Land of the Dead, mainly due to a certain leading lady with the last name of Argento.

The set up and synopsis for the latest… Off the coast of Delaware sits the cozy Plum Island where two families are locked in a struggle for power, as it has been for generations. The O’Flynn’s, headed by patriarch Patrick O’Flynn (Kenneth Welsh) approach the zombie plague with a shoot-to-kill attitude. The Muldoons, headed by Shamus Muldoon (Richard Fitzpatrick), feel that the zombies should be quarantined and kept ‘alive,’ in hopes that a solution will someday be found.

The O’Flynn’s, who are clearly outnumbered, are forced to exile Patrick by boat to the mainland, where he meets up with a cynical band of soldiers, headed by Guardsman Sarge (Alan Van Sprang). They join forces and return to the island, to find that the zombie plague has fully gripped the divided community, and the body count is rising.

As the battle between humans and zombies escalates, the master filmmaker continues to reinvent the modern horror genre with wicked humor and pointed social commentary.

Coming to VOD, Amazon and Xbox live before a theatrical release?! What the hell is this bull? That’s just not right.

Yeah – Not only is it not right, but I think this film will be lucky to see any theaters at all, except for the probability of a “limited theatrical release” – read 100 theaters or less.
