Look, even David Arquette and Courtney Cox Arquette are shocked, as if to say “Look! Craven is back! We’re making another Scream film!” Variety reported earlier that Scream 4 is on and truly happening. Shooting will begin in the near future and a preliminary release date has been set for April 12, 2011. If they could have held off for just a few months we could have come out and said “a full fifteen years since the original”.

Most important to the process, Wes Craven who directed all three previous films will be returning to direct the fourth film, and even more so Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox Arquette and David Arquette will all be back as well.

In the past there has been a rumor that this is the beginning of a new trilogy. I can’t confirm nor deny that. Simply put, I just don’t have any information. We do know that this isn’t going to be in 3-D, which given the current state of studio horror would not have been a shocker to see them attempt the 3-D route. My theory contends that by shooting this traditionally they will save some cash, and this franchise, which has been the most lucrative for the Weinstein’s will help put them back on course going forward.

Bob Weinstein tells Variety: ” ‘Scream’ has been such an integral part of Dimension’s history, and I look forward to continuing the franchise,

Right now, it’s too early in the game to start tossing opinions around one way or the other. Craven has a hit or miss batting average. The question is, can he pull out the stops and re-invigorate both the slasher genre, and this franchise as he did in 1996? We’ll know in roughly a year from now.
