Christina Ricci Has an After.Life

I love Christina Ricci. Greatest actress ever? Not in a million years, but she’s just so damn cute and likable that it’s hard to not like her. I’d put Drew Barrymore on that same list until her incredible turn as Little Edie Beale in HBO’s Grey Gardens. (What’s that you say? You don’t know about Grey Gardens? Rectify that situation now and rent the astounding Maysles brothers documentary. It will change your life. You’re welcome.)

After.Life sounds like a pretentious Bright Eyes song title from Digital Ash in A Digital Urn, or maybe a TV show about dead people on the internet, starring some precious little CW actress who can communicate with the interdead. But it’s not. It’s a thriller starring Ricci, Liam Neeson, and Justin Long in the oddest mix of acting talent since anything Bradley Cooper has been in.

The film is about a woman named Anna (Ricci) who wakes up after a terrible car accident to find herself in a funeral home, being prepped for display by Eliot (Neeson). But Anna doesn’t feel dead and can hear, see, and feel everything. Eliot explains that he’s the only one who can communicate with her and that she’s just “crossing over” to the other side. Anna’s boyfriend Paul doesn’t buy Eliot’s schtick and begins to uncover the truth about Anna’s situation and the questionable mortician Eliot.
