‘The Wolfman’ Remake Get’s Gogos. But Will It Be Enough?

by Marc Patterson
I love, and I mean LOVE that famed horror illustrator and artist Basil Gogos recently painted a new Wolfman image for the upcoming Universal Studios remake of The Wolfman. But it doesn’t change my skepticism about the upcoming release this February 12th. One year ago we reported this film was pushed back from an early 2009 release into the November of 2009. July rolled around and more bad news rolled in. Universal didn’t want the competition during the fall movie season and so gave it another shove back – this time into 2010. What we in December of 2008 declared to be our most anticipated film of 2009 wasn’t even going to see a 2009 release date. In October staff writer Dustin Hall got an exclusive early preview of the film and seemed mostly satisfied, but declared it to be too predictable and very much “by-the-numbers”. Granted, his review was not of the finished product so who knows what has been done in the countless edits, and re-cuts since.
Well, who can blame Universal for pulling out the big guns. I mean, if we have to be baited along like fish looking for a snack we might as well get something far more richly satisfying. Otherwise… well let’s not contemplate it. Let’s just talk about the amazing Gogos.
I don’t even need to dispel anything about Gogos. If you’re reading this and you don’t know who this guy is then seriously, shame on you. Gogos is most well known for having painted the most iconic monsters and characters in horror. We’re talking Bela Lugosi as Dracula, Lon Chaney, the original Wolfman, as well as a slew of Hammer Horror icons, such as Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. His images have graced the covers of Famous Monsters of Filmland magazine, where perhaps he’s gained most of his fame. His work is easily distinguishable, often imitated, yet never matched. For all the troubles the new Wolfman has been having getting off the ground this could be a blessing that lifts the curse. Who knows. All we know, all I know, is that I love it. The only question I have now? Where do I get this poster?
Check out a watermarked image of the poster below. (If we can get you a non-watermarked one we will), and then do yourself a big favor and click on over to CHUD.com for a great interview with Gogos.
