The Blood Red Water of ‘Piranha’ Goes Blu This Spring

If there’s one thing to be said for re-makes is that they always provide a window for re-issues of the original film. Usually that re-issue means an upgrade, with cleaned up source material, added extras, and the lot. You can hate the remake but you gotta love the red tide ushered in their wake. In the case of Piranha 3-D I’m declaring a win-win. I’ve been pretty vocal from the outset that this is one remake I have absolutely no problem with.  In my professional opinion the original wasn’t that great and from what we’ve seen so far the remake in the hands of capable director Alexandre Aja will be not just a improvement over the original, but a squeamishly delightful bloodbath filled with gratuitous exploitation throughout. I can’t wait.

To make the news official I’ve just read from our friends at HorrorSquad that true to prediction the original Roger Corman cult classic Piranha will be given the Blu-ray treatment, though sadly not in time for the April 16th release of the remake.  To date no extras have been listed on the film, which makes the $24.99 retail that Amazon is asking a bit on the steep side.  The disc will be available on May 4, 2010 from Shout! Factory.

You can pre-order the Blu-Ray right here: Piranha (Roger Corman Cult Classics) [Blu-ray]

Now check out a totally gratuitous picture of Riley Steele who’ll be starring in the upcoming 3-D Remake! (And you thought Betsy Rue was something in 3-D!)
