‘House of the Devil’ DVD/Blu-ray Details Have Me Asking WTF?
by Marc Patterson
If you’ve been a regular reader here you know that I just love Ti West’s Satanic Panic film The House of the Devil. Its slow deliberate pacing and atmospheric scares combined with a phenomenal job in re-creating that old musty era of the 80′s that we all remember a hell of a lot more than the neon roller derby won me over on my first viewing. It’s up there high on my favorite of 2009 list.
On February 2, 2010 Dark Sky Films will release The House of the Devil on both DVD and Blu-ray and I have to say… what the hell are they thinking? This is quite possibly the first time I’ve seen a new release hit the market with the DVD sporting more extras than the Blu-ray. (and somehow in all this we’re expected to pay more for the Blu version?)
The DVD will Feature:
- Audio commentary by writer/director/editor West and actress Donahue
- Audio commentary by West, producers Larry Fessenden and Peter Phok and sound designer Graham Reznick
- “In the HOUSE OF THE DEVIL” featurette
- “Behind the HOUSE OF THE DEVIL” featurette
- Deleted scenes
- Theatrical trailer
The Blu-ray will feature a paltry:
- Audio commentary by writer/director/editor West and actress Donahue
- “In the HOUSE OF THE DEVIL” featurette
- Theatrical trailer
Retail price is $27.98 for the DVD and $34.98 for the Blu-ray. So you know what I’m going to do? Purchase the DVD. I’m a sucker for extras and the added commentary track and featurette will make this worth the price. Not only that, but asking even $27.98 for a DVD these days is pretty ballsy. So we’ll see if we can’t get that down closer to $20 by the release date (Amazon?). And the best part of purchasing this on DVD (at least for me?) My non Blu-ray owning family members who use my collection as their personal rental store (something I’m happy to provide I might add) will be overjoyed that they finally get to check this one out!
