Blood Between the Panels PREVIEW: ZombieBomb!

by Bryce Holland
Horror comics don’t get a lot of press. Maybe it’s because there aren’t a ton of super high-profile writers or artists working on them nowadays. Maybe it’s because they don’t feature flash or recognizable characters of more popular super-hero comics. Whatever the reason, it’s a bit of a call for celebration when I get wind of a big horror comic coming out, and it is with that in mind that I give you all “ZombieBomb!”
Set to come out in the Spring of 2010, “ZombieBomb!” is an anthology style horror mini-series showcasing short stories from number of talents, including veterans like Todd Dezago (Spectacular Spider-Man, Perhapnauts) and Shawn McManus (Swamp Thing, Sandman). Now, you’re probably asking yourself, “What could this anthology comic possibly be about?” Well, if you guessed “zombies” then you’re absolutely correct. From the looks of it though, this book looks to run the gamut of sub-genres and tones, with stories involving everything from hardcore horror to off-the-wall comedy.
Now, ordinarily, I wouldn’t really find it prudent to mention a new zombie comic coming out. I mean, of all the horror creatures out there, zombies are probably featured more comics than any other (zombies were featured in three out my last five reviews. But this series really strikes me as a bit different. For one thing, I love anthology books. The variety of stories and the number of creators featured really make you feel like you’re getting more bang for your buck. Another awesome thing about this project is that it looks like it is going to be a horror comic written for horror fans, by horror fans. Case in point: one Mr. Bryan White, editor and writer of the great, regularly updated horror/exploitation cinema blog Cinema Suicide. As a regular subscriber to this blog, I know that White has a deep love and appreciation of all things horror, and if his involvement is any indication, this book is shaping up to be an awesome read. Most of all, though, the thing that really got me excited about this series, and the thing that usually piques my interest in any book, is the art. When drawing zombies, the artist really gets to cut loose and render some horrifying, gut-churningly disgusting images, and the ones I’ve seen that are going to be in this series are some of the best of recent memory. Don’t take my word for it, though. Check out the gallery below.
ZombieBomb!, published by the fiends at Terminal Press, should be available for order some time around the first quarter of 2010. Give this one a look.
