‘Alien’ Quadrilogy to Go Blu-ray With Added Material
Marc Patterson
I know A LOT of you are going to be excited by this news. (And I know a lot of you already are.) We’ve been waiting a long time, but the wait is almost over. The Alien Quadrilogy is finally getting some Blu-ray love. But if that wasn’t enough the LA Times reported that Weaver will be recording new commentary for the Blu-ray release of the franchise in the upcoming weeks.
Then adding some crème to your brûlée The Digital Bits reports that “The box set is going to blow away fans of the previous DVD Quadrilogy. Not only have all of those previous extras have been included, but TONS of new material has been added as well exclusively for the Blu-ray release–extras that should make the BD WELL worth upgrading to.” The new box set doesn’t yet have a release date, but look for it in mid to late 2010.
Now the only question on everyone’s mind is what are they going to do to the print itself? Clearly packaging wise this isn’t just a straight transfer to Blu. I have to admit, the DVD looks pretty damn fine, especially when upconverted in my Blu player. I really can’t imagine the film getting a much better treatment than what it has now, at least not without losing some of that warm “analog fuzz” that makes it such a treasured part of my horror canon.
Here’s the best part of the LA Times article for me though… Sigourney Weaver admits to the Times that she had never before watched all four films back to back. She adds that “I just recently made my [19-year-old] daughter watch them. She had never seen them before, believe it or not. I think she just prefers to think of me as good ol’ mom, you know, not some person running around a spaceship with a flamethrower.”
Personally… I like the flamethrowing Sigourney Weaver the best.
