New ‘Season of the Witch’ Trailer Has Us Scratching Our Head
by Marc Patterson
Okay – I’m a day late and a dollar short, but better late than never I suppose. The first full length trailer for the upcoming Nicolas Cage / Ron Perlman flick Season of the Witch dropped online a few days ago and I just got my ass around to watching it today and I must say… I’m a hell of a lot more impressed with what the film could be than I was from the teaser trailer first hit the net. That’s to say I’m not completely sold, because fact is I was completely unimpressed with the initial teaser trailer. This new trailer fleshes out the plot line a bit more and is far more coherently edited. The story revolves around our lead knight played by Nicolas Cage who must transport a dangerous witch across all sorts of perilous country, all the while being besieged upon by the endless nightmares conjured by this frightening beast of a woman.
There are several things both going for this film and going against it which still have me grossly undecided on whether I should even look forward to the film:
1. Dominic Sena directs. This guy either hits a homerun or he strikes out. There’s no consistency. Kalifornia? Good. Whiteout? Well… let’s say it was such a let down we didn’t even cover it as promised horror but turned out to be just a washed up thriller gone soft. Ashamedly, Gone in 60 Seconds is a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. Yes, I realize the film fully blows ass, but while some guys love Football, I love cars and am a total gearhead. I just can’t turn off any film with a good car chase in it. So far I’m undecided on what the outcome will be.
2. Nicholas Cage… I’ll come out and say it. For the most part, I’m not a fan. I just can’t stand that slackjacked dumb confused look he carries in almost every film he’s in, but he’s a great actor when he decides to act. So again… I can’t tell shit from the trailer as he’s surprisingly featured less than the witch, and possibly even less than Perlman’s character, which leads me to number three…
3. Ron Perlman. Is this guy ever off? Rarely. He’s one thing going for the film.
So the jury is still out on this one. If you haven’t seen it yet, take a good hard look at it below and let us know what you think.
