Mistress Juliya

Interview by Marc Patterson

Over this summer I got the chance to hook up with Mistress Juliya, from Fuse TV’s “Let’s Rock It”. She’s a long time metal maven, having hosted Uranium and is currently also running the Slave to the Metal tour. She’s interviewed just about every iconic figure in metal and not only that but she’s dabbled in horror film, starring in the off the wall low budget flick, GothKill. (Reviewed here)

Especially endearing to my heart is that the girl is total east coast, hailing from my favorite city, New York City. One thing that’s immediately apparent is that while she’s got a pure metal edge, she’s no elitist, and was one of the most fun and laid back interviewees I’ve had the chance to talk with.

Brutal As Hell: So how’s it going?

Mistress Juliya: I’m good. I’m getting ready to host a show tonight. juliya2

Brutal As Hell: That’s right. You’re in the middle of your Slave to the Metal tour. So how’s the tour going so far?

Mistress Juliya: The tour is going pretty good. My partner and I started it about a year ago and basically it’s endless. We head out and host these shows for these local bands as record labels don’t really have the budget to be sending out A&R reps and more. If I see something that really stands out I would love to help them get signed and that’s really the goal of the whole thing.

Brutal As Hell: So do you have regular bands that are actually touring with you, or is this a series of unique shows set up city to city?

Mistress Juliya: Yes. Unique shows from city to city promoting the local talent in that city. You know, in that way the bands can cross-pollinate their fans and go out and play and showcase of the metal underground in that city.

Brutal As Hell: Band wise, you’re obviously exposed to a lot of different stuff out there. So who is really hot right now that you feel are up and coming that we should be looking out for?

Mistress Juliya: There are a couple bands that stand out. Cab Ride Home from Virginia. Unknown from Virginia – They’re awesome. To be honest though, a lot of these bands out there don’t really understand what it really takes. I see at least twenty bands every weekend. You really have to work hard at your craft to stand out from the rest and I think that a lot of kids are really lazy and they throw together whatever in their garage and think they’re rock stars because their high school buddies are into that. And then there are bands that really work really hard, and it sounds like they work hard because the sound is really tight and the instruments sound fantastic, they have a proper press kit together, and they’re really busting their ass, and those are the guys who are going to have a chance out there. But there’s a lot of stuff you have to sift through to get to those guys.

MistressJuliyaBrutal As Hell: Absolutely. I think that holds true in just about anything. So, we are a horror site, so I probably should talk about your film Gothkill. So how did you get wrapped up in that crazy party of a film?

Mistress Juliya: Well the guy who directed the film, JJ, worked at Fuse where I did my TV show. So I’m very much into the whole dark thing. So he came to me and said Jules, how do you feel about playing a devil bitch? And I said “Oh I’m it.” So basically I got to be a Coop girl for a day, which was awesome. When we were done I didn’t even take my outfit off and went out drinking after that because I was like this is freakin’ awesome. So I had a blast walking around half naked and bright red with thick horns. It was quite empowering.

Brutal As Hell: [Laughs] Nice, so you were only on the set for a day? Obviously it’s a low budget, so it’s a short shoot…

Mistress Juliya: Yeah it was like one or two days, but it was a LONG day. We were there for like sixteen hours.

Brutal As Hell: Have you done anything horror wise since?

Mistress Juliya: I hosted a DVD for Fangoria called Blood Drive, which was awesome. I really enjoyed working with those guys. I also did a film with my friend where I played a cannibal. That was called Hungry Man, and that actually had Peter Greene as the main character in that movie. Love that man! He’s such a freak. It’s something I’m working in and dabbling in. Horror is definitely a fun genre to be in. I want to be killed and brutalized. So bring it on!

Brutal As Hell: So what are your favorite horror films that you dig the most?

Mistress Juliya

Mistress Juliya: Of course I love gore. That’s always fun. But personally, I really enjoy the horror movies that scare the shit out of you without needing the gore. You know what I’m saying?

Brutal As Hell: Definitely.

Mistress Juliya: So for me the original The Omen, and the original Chainsaw Massacre, because I feel they were able to succeed in scaring the crap out of you without having blood and guts everywhere and I think that’s masterful.

Brutal As Hell: Oh absolutely. I love the John Carpenter stuff for the same reason. He’s so good at that.

Mistress Juliya: Exactly. I think that’s what the art of horror is. Of course being such an extreme person and loving visual things and loving metal music I love the gore films. I thought the Saw series was great with that. I thought the plot was great in the beginning and got a little too twisted in this last one, but those death scenes were fantastic. If you can make me cringe, right on! And you know, we’re talking about Halloween, I’m so happy that Rob Zombie is directing them right now. Rob is fascinated with the whole maniac and killer thing, which he’s given them almost a human side where you sympathize with them. So I’m really excited to see Halloween 2. I thought the new Chainsaw movies were fantastic. Whenever someone does a remake of a classic you’re like oh god, please don’t mess it up, and I thought they made them really good. I was really happy with those films.

Brutal As Hell: Have you caught wind of the new one they’re doing, A Nightmare on Elm Street? That’s gotten a lot of fans going back and forth on that one.juliya6

Mistress Juliya: I think it’s going to be awesome because that movie was so visual and now with all the things that we can do that we couldn’t do in the 80’s it’s going to be out of control.

Brutal As Hell: Okay, last question is actually going to be a game. Are you familiar with “Fuck, Kill, Mary”?

Mistress Juliya: [Laughs] No, what’s that?

Brutal As Hell: I’m going to name three names. You have to fuck one, kill one, and marry one.

Mistress Juliya: So I can’t kill them all?

Brutal As Hell: No.

Mistress Juliya: This is the funnest interview by far dude. Okay, let’s do this.

Brutal As Hell: So for you I went with icons of metal. So I’m picking Alice Cooper, Ozzy Osbourne, and Satan.

Mistress Juliya: Oh you know I’m going to marry Satan. Because the perks that come with that one would be fuckin’ phenomenal. I’d get to reign in hell and be a red devil girl like I am in Gothkill for ever, and ever. And you know Satan’s gotta have a big penis.

Brutal As Hell: [Laughs] He’s gotta have the biggest one.

Mistress Juliya: So I want to marry Satan. Think about the pre-nup I would get! To reign in eternal damnation with the power in my hands… So we’re marrying Satan.

Mistress JuliyaBrutal As Hell: Okay, so we have to fuck and kill two more…

Mistress Juliya: We’re going to kill Alice Cooper because I know he’d like that sort of thing. And I’ll have to get creative and I think he’d make some phenomenal noises as his guts are being ripped out of his body.

Brutal As Hell: Excellent. And so that means…

Mistress Juliya: You know I’ve never thought of Ozzy in a sexual way, but I think it would be kind of entertaining to hear what his dirty talk sounds like. Plus, I’m a pretty kinky girl so I might give him a heart attack and double-whammy.

Brutal As Hell: [Laughs] It would be a lot of British mumbling, that’s for sure! Well that’s pretty much from us.

Mistress Juliya: Well thanks for the interview and hopefully we get to talk again in the future.

Brutal As Hell: Definitely and if we see you out there on the road we’ll be sure to say hi!
