‘Season of the Witch’ Gets a Trailer

Season of the Witch, starring Nicolas Cage as a Medieval knight tasked with transporting a witch through dangerous territory to…somewhere (the lake where they see if she floats, I guess?), has just gotten a trailer.

(make sure to select to watch the trailer in HD)

The trailer is very short, and doesn’t show much about the plot or characters. For all the layman knows, this could be a film about Nic Cage’s hair piece becoming possessed. In fact, that might be an interesting movie. The trailer is littered with jump scares and choppy editing, but I find myself doubting that the film will use these cheap gimmicks so much. There’s just something about the editing in this short trailer that rings false – that this was all clever editing to make for an intense trailer. I hope I’m right. There’s nothing scary about a movie with sloppy, fast editing and shit jumping out at you every two seconds. Reminds me of walking through a cheap haunted house, and there’s that one asshole that jumps out from behind you, gets up in your face, and won’t let you move along – only he does it every 30 seconds, the entire time you’re there.

Season of the Witch also stars Ron Perlman – if there were any reason for me to watch this film, I think this is it. I’m not counting on any Leaving Las Vegas turns from Nic Cage here; I think those genius days for him are over. But Perlman gets me excited. Season of the Witch is directed by Dominic Sena, who has a hit or miss track record with films like Kalifornia, Gone in 60 Seconds (there it is), a hand full of Janet Jackson videos (???), Swordfish, and the latest film in which Kate Beckinsale wastes her talent: Whiteout.

Season of the Witch releases in Spring, 2010.
