Ti West, director of The Roost and Cabin Fever 2, is bringing the 80s back – in a good way – with his latest effort, The House of the Devil. You can catch the new red band trailer on Hulu. The plot, from Magnolia Pictures:

Sam (Donahue) is a pretty college sophomore, so desperate to earn some cash for a deposit on an apartment that she accepts a babysitting job even after she finds out there is no baby.  Mr. and Mrs. Ulman (cult actors Noonan and Woronov) are the older couple who lure Sam out to their creeky Victorian mansion deep in the woods, just in time for a total lunar eclipse. Megan (Gerwig) is Sam’s best friend, who gives her a ride out to the house, and reluctantly leaves her there despite suspecting that something is amiss.  Victor (Bowen) at first seems like just a creepy guy lurking around the house, but quickly makes it clear that Sam will end this night in a bloody fight for her life….”

The plot sounds pretty 80s to me, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. So far Ti West has garnered much cult love for The Roost, while also receiving some mixed opinions on his cockiness over the studio tretment of Cabin Fever 2 (the cut the studio is releasing is apparently nothing like his vision). Throwbacks done right, with the proper director (i.e. pre-Halloween Rob Zombie, Eli Roth) can be quite entertaining, and can actually make for great films. The trailer looks interesting enough, and it doesn’t seem like West went for the typical cheesy aesthetic, instead opting for muted tones and a more subtle style. If I like this movie, I could see easily fitting it into my DVD collection, amidst my other beloved horror classics.

The House of the Devil stars Jocelin Donahue (The Burrowers), Tom Noonan (The Monster Squad, Snow Angels), Mary Woronov (The Devil’s Rejects), Greta Gerwig (Baghead), AJ Bowen (The Signal), and Dee Wallace (The Stepford Wives, E.T.). You can’t have an 80s-style horror flick without Dee Wallace. It’s the 8th horror commandment, I think.

You can watch The House of the Devil October 1st via Amazon, XBOX Live, and Video on Demand, or wait to see it in theaters on October 30th. Until then, check out the final one-sheet below. It reminds me of going to the video store in the early 90s and checking out all the older horror movie boxes. Most of those movies were awful when I took them home, but I have higher hopes for The House of the Devil.  Take a look at the red band trailer and one sheet below:
