I love discovering cool little projects that are off the beaten path, and to your possible dismay, I love art house cinema.  Sue me. I recently came across this very sexy and violent short film over at Quiet Earth that reeks of the gritty brilliance of Gaspar Noé’s Irreversible, but yet with an exclaimed “modern giallo” twist.  Don’t let those “art house” words turn you off though. If one thing is guaranteed, it’s plenty of blood, but with none of the kind that comes with the legions of mindless slashers.

Synopsis:

The Red Door is a blood-drenched psychological mystery through the distorted gaze of Lynda (Estefania Iglesias) and her fantasy self, Loma, heroines who both try to redeem Lynda from a tragic past. Described as a modern ‘Giallo’ film—a reference to the Italian exploitation shockers of the ’60s and’70s— The Red Door takes us through a dark and visually striking journey set in the streets of Hollywood and in the bent mind of its heroine Lynda

The short film (read roughly 40 minutes) is currently circulating the festival segment to much critical acclaim.  It is directed by Jason Bognacki.
