Joe Dante’s The Hole Wins Venice Prize
by Britt Hayes
Joe Dante’s The Hole, a family-style horror film, has won the Venice Film Festival’s Premio Persol for the most creative 3D film released between September 2008 and August 2009. The Hole was up against Henry Selick’s Coraline, Patrick Lussier’s My Bloody Valentine 3D, and Pixar’s Up. With all the praise for Up, this is a great win for Dante, whose last major film release was Looney Tunes: Back in Action (shudder).
The Hole tells the story of a family that moves into a new home to discover a padlocked trapdoor in the cellar. Two brothers discover that the hole leads them into their deepest, darkest fears. The jury at the Venice Film Festival praised The Hole, saying it best represented “the exploration of this new frontier of cinematic language.”
The Hole is produced by Bold Films. There is no official release information at this time.
Variety has the scoop.
