Killer clown fans get ready to swallow this one up like a ball park hot dog. Frayed is a mindless psychological slasher film with the killer dressed in a killer clown mask. The premise of the film is very simple and lacks originality for the most part. It borrows a lot of elements from other slasher films, but then again what film in this day and age doesn’t?
Right off the bat the story starts with a typical normal family birthday that’s recorded on home video. Kurt the brother in the video happens to be an aggressive little boy. He’s the typical misbehaved kid that needs a few cracks across the ass to straighten him out. The kid clearly has a few cells missing from his brain. Moments later after the recorded video was shown we see Kurt’s mom being barbarically beating to a juicy pulp. Sarah (sister) of Kurt is on the phone with 9-1-1 while detectives on scene are casing the home for clues to see what happened. Right then and there you are figuring that the son may have murdered his mother. Kurt is summoned and institutionalized and suffering from a rare form of dissociative personality disorder.
Fast forward to many years later and we see the sister (Sarah) with her smoking hot friend Victoria, they are secretly planning a night out with their sex driven jock boyfriends. They tell the mother that they are going out to a movie which is a lie. As Sarah is trying to lie to her mother, Veronica does something quiet ravishing with a pickle behind the mom’s back that mentally BLOWS your mind.
A diabolical stabbing later sends this killer on a murderous rampage and he’s on the loose like the genital area of a female prostitute. As Sarah and Veronica are hanging with their boyfriends at a swashbuckling camp site they are playing a drinking game involving farts. What? Who does that shit? All the heavy drinking leads to some intoxicated sexuality.
The length of this film cuts close to two hours which I felt could have been shortened by 25 minutes or so, and throughout offers little in the way of any major surprises. Though it does pick up with some intensity like a bag of pop rocks sizzling in a cup of soda. We see what transpires at the end and it’s a titty twister of an ending. The acting is average and believable for the most part. Most Lionsgate movies seem to cast an average group of actors for their films. The gore score of this film is above average where we witness some brutal beatings and blood splatter but nothing ground breaking.
If you’re looking for a blood-spattered killer clown movie for the evening or to kill some time instead of polishing your goods then by all means check out Frayed. But, if you’re thinking Frayed is going to be an Oscar winning film then maybe you should just plan on frosting the old cupcake instead.
