If there is anything I love more than a cult zombie flick it is independent films produced by Wes Craven.  Wes seems to know exactly what will fly and what won’t fly when it comes to getting the attention of a horror audience.  Nicholas Mastandrea followed Craven’s protocol to the letter which makes this a well presented movie, although like many horror flicks from the 80s it makes it very predictable.  But onto the flick…

The Breed is one of the best animal attack films I have seen in a long time.  The plot is the standard movie fair. Five friends fly to a deserted island owned by a deceased relative only to discover the island is inhabited by dangerous creatures.  In this case it is dogs that escaped from a military attack dog training facility.  The friends all get liquored up in the cabin and discover a puppy, the puppy then leads Taryn Manning into the woods where she is bitten by an adult dog and starts to feel strange afterwards like she can sense the pack of dogs on the island.  The rest of the movie follows along the typical plot line where the dogs attack the cabin unsuccessfully until an all out assault is carried out in which Hill Harper (the groups one black friend) goes into the basement and is mauled and eaten.  The rest of the bunch takes refuge in the attic until morning in which they attempt an escape on a sail boat, only to have one of Wes Craven’s signature twist endings.

All in all this was a pretty good movie for an almost step by step attempt to make a horror movie.  I can’t see anything wrong with following the same patterns established however I think there could have been a little more to the story than what was presented.  I also watched this on Showtime so I am unable to give a DVD recommendation based upon special features though I probably wouldn’t actually pay to own the movie.
