Some Like ‘Em Cold. Norwegian Slasher Cold Prey Gets a Release Date!
I’ve not been able to pinpoint what I love so much about the winter. Unlike most folks in the world I love the winter. I like the feeling of hard packed snow crunching under my boots, the utter lack of sound that occurs right after a winter storm, and ripping through the unplowed back roads in my AWD ride. I especially love getting a tall pint of ale poured while I warm myself up at the local pub with friends. Winter horror has all the same appeal. There’s a sense of desolation, isolation, and survivalism that kicks in automatically. You can actually feel your core temperature drop when you watch the horror unfold in frozen suspense.
I don’t have to tell you that I’m very excited to finally sit down with the Norwegian slasher film Cold Prey. This DVD will be hitting the domestic US market on January 20, thanks to Anchor Bay who recently picked this gem up.
Cold Prey follows a group of extreme snowboarders as they become stranded on a mountaintop. Without cell signal to call in for help they take shelter in an abandoned lodge. It doesn’t take long for them to discover that someone (or something) has recently inhabited the lodge. Worst of all, it prefers them dead.
Despite a basic formulated plot, everything we’ve both seen and heard about this film promises to be a strong cut above the mediocre slashers that have plagued American filmmakers for the past decade. Additionally, rumor has it this DVD promises to come packed with extras. We’ll have more info for you as it becomes available, but in the meantime take a look at the official press release below and check out the official website for more info and the trailer!

Europe’s Acclaimed Horror Sensation Comes Home…To The Bay!
ANCHOR BAY ENTERTAINMENT PRESENTS COLD PREY
Freeze with Fear January 20, 2009
TORONTO, ON – Cold Prey, the Norwegian horror film that took Europe by storm and won an international fan following, has been acquired for North American DVD release by Anchor Bay Entertainment, the acknowledged leader in classic and contemporary horror programming, and Indigomotion, a subsidiary label of Leomax Entertainment.
Playing to sold-out crowds in film festivals around the world, including the 2007 Slamdance Film Festival, the San Francisco International Film Festival, Frightfest UK, Transylvania International Film Festival, Montreal World Film Festival, Cold Prey (aka Fritt Vilt) will be released on DVD January 20, 2009.
A gripping horror film set against the majestic backdrop of a blinding snow-clad landscape (director Roar Uthaug is an avid snowboard enthusiast!), Cold Prey has been praised by Ain’t It Cool News as “Probably the most perfect slasher film ever made,” while Variety said the film “orchestrates its scares with brute effectiveness.” Screengoblin.com called it “a tense, stylish and viciously unnerving journey into a frozen nightmare,” and Arrow In The Head exclaimed “If you enjoyed the original FRIDAY THE 13TH and HALLOWEEN, you’re going to love COLD PREY!” Due to the unprecedented audience response already enjoyed by the film, the sequel COLD PREY II was recently released in Norway – and already shattering local box-office records.
It’s midwinter. Five youngsters are heading for the Jotunheimen mountain area to go snowboarding. On the slope, one of them has a bad fall and breaks a leg. There is no sign of any other people around, and their mobile phones are out of range.
They catch sight of a mountain hotel in the distance, and decide to find shelter there. The hotel lies empty and silent, obviously closed down years ago. The phone lines are dead, and the youngsters realize they have to spend the night in the hotel. But it turns out they’re not alone. In the basement they discover a filthy dungeon of a room, where somebody has recently lived…
